ISRI Description and Specification
Telic covers clean, uncorroded aluminium borings, turnings, and machining chips from two or more alloy families. The specification sets limits on fines content (the fraction passing through a defined mesh size), free iron (from machine tool wear or steel workpiece contamination), oil and coolant content, and moisture. Given the high surface area of machining turnings relative to their mass, dross generation during melting is significantly higher for Telic than for solid scrap grades — this is reflected in the pricing discount relative to solid casting or sheet grades. The ISRI specification typically calls for the lot to be sold against defined maximum levels of zinc, tin, and magnesium content, as these elements can arise from mixed-alloy machining operations and significantly affect the quality of the secondary alloy produced.
Who Uses Telic Scrap
Secondary smelters with rotary tilting furnaces (RTFs) optimised for turnings processing, and dedicated aluminium chips drying/de-oiling facilities, are the primary processors of Telic. Automotive machining clusters — cylinder head, engine block, gearbox, and brake component machining plants — are the principal generators. In India, machining clusters in Rajkot (automotive components), Pune (passenger car and commercial vehicle parts), Chennai (engine components), and Coimbatore (pump and valve manufacturing) produce large volumes of aluminium turnings that are aggregated and processed by local secondary smelters. Centrifuge de-oiling and rotary dryer operations are often applied to Telic before melting to reduce the coolant and oil content, improving recovery rates and reducing furnace emissions.
