ISRI Grade Name: Candy (No. 1 Heavy Copper Scrap)

ISRI Description and Specification

Candy covers clean, unalloyed, uncoated heavy copper scrap — including bus bars (busbars), commutator segments, heavy clippings, punchings, and copper tubing of minimum 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6 mm) wall thickness. The “heavy” designation distinguishes Candy from wire-based grades (Berry and Birch) — the material is in solid, thick-section form rather than drawn wire. The unalloyed requirement means Candy must be free of copper-zinc (brass) or copper-tin (bronze) alloy components. It must also be free of tin, lead, solder coatings, paint, iron attachments, and insulation of any kind. Clean copper refrigeration and air-conditioning tubing removed from HVAC equipment (provided it meets the thickness and cleanliness requirements) may qualify as Candy if uncontaminated.

Who Uses Candy Scrap

Copper bus bar manufacturers, transformer and switchgear producers, electrical infrastructure manufacturers, and copper tube producers are the principal buyers of Candy-grade copper. Bus bars derived from Candy scrap are re-manufactured into power distribution bus bars, switchgear components, and motor-winding conductors. Copper tube manufacturers — producing plumbing, refrigeration, and HVAC tubing — use Candy as a clean, high-copper scrap charge in their tube-drawing furnaces. In India, the rapid expansion of data centre infrastructure, EV charging networks, and industrial electrical systems is driving increased demand for copper busbars and heavy copper conductors, sustaining strong underlying demand for Candy-grade scrap from domestic secondary processors.
