ISRI Description
LMS and HMS Bundles represent the compressed bale form of light-to-medium gauge steel scrap. Baling increases density (minimum approximately 75 lb/cu ft for qualifying bundles), improves charging efficiency, reduces void space in the furnace charge, and makes lighter-gauge material more suitable for direct conveyor or crane-and-bucket charging. Bundles must be magnetically sorted (non-ferrous contamination removed) and must not contain non-metal-coated material beyond specification tolerances. The bundling process allows a wide range of light scrap forms — tin cans, sheet offcuts, automotive stampings — to be processed into a predictable, dense, directly chargeable form.
Who Uses Bundled LMS/HMS Scrap
All EAF and induction furnace operators who accept baled or bundled ferrous scrap as part of their charge use bundled LMS/HMS. In India, baling facilities at scrap yards and import terminals produce bundles from commingled light steel for supply to melt shops. The baling process also allows smaller scrap yards to aggregate and densify lighter material that would otherwise be uneconomical to transport or charge as loose scrap.
