The HMS 1&2 blend (most commonly 80% HMS 1 and 20% HMS 2 by weight) is a commercially practical mixed grade that allows sellers to move commingled heavy melting steel without the labour cost and logistics of complete segregation, and allows buyers to accept a defined mixed grade with predictable average quality. The 80:20 ratio is the dominant international convention (particularly in South Asian trade), though 70:30 and other ratios are traded depending on buyer specifications and contract terms. Pricing is typically interpolated between the standalone HMS 1 and HMS 2 prices, weighted by the agreed blend ratio. Indian steel mills often specify HMS 1&2 (80:20) as their standard import specification when buying bulk vessel loads of heavy ferrous scrap.

Who Uses HMS Blended Scrap

All EAF and induction furnace steel producers who consume HMS 1 or HMS 2 individually may buy HMS 1&2 blend, with pricing adjusted to reflect the mixed composition. It is particularly common in large-volume bulk cargo trades where complete segregation of 1/4″ and 1/8″ material is impractical at the export terminal.
