ISRI Description and Specification
Terse covers new, clean, uncoated aluminium foil from 1000-series, 3000-series, or 8000-series alloys — the three alloy families used in packaging, pharmaceutical, and household foil production. The material must be free of anodised foil (which has an aluminium oxide coating that affects melting), radar chaff (military aluminium chaff strips), paper or plastic laminate, and any other coating or organic material. Terse is a “new” grade — manufacturing offcuts, defective rolls, or trim scrap generated during foil rolling and converting operations, not post-consumer used foil.
Who Uses Terse Scrap
Aluminium foil rolling mills and secondary smelters who can process thin-gauge material efficiently are the primary buyers of Terse. Foil mills may directly re-charge Terse clippings into their own melt furnaces to close the loop on in-house scrap. Secondary ingot producers supplying 1xxx or 3xxx alloy ingots to foil producers and food/pharmaceutical packaging converters are also significant buyers. Because foil is very high surface-area relative to mass, melt losses (dross) are higher than for heavier gauge material, which must be factored into pricing. Packaging converters, pharmaceutical blister-pack manufacturers, and food-service aluminium foil producers generate Terse as production trim.
