ISRI Description and Specification

Trump is a more specific and typically higher-value sub-category of aluminium casting scrap, consisting exclusively of clean automobile aluminium castings of identifiable size and origin. The key distinction from Tense is the “identifiable” requirement — Trump lots should consist of recognisable automotive castings (engine blocks, transmission cases, cylinder heads, suspension arms, wheel hubs, brake calipers, and similar components) rather than unidentifiable or mixed foundry scrap. The ISRI specification requires Trump lots to be free of iron attachments (steel inserts, liners, bolts), brass bushings, excessive dirt, and non-metallic material. Oil and grease are permitted up to 2% by weight, consistent with used automotive part norms. Trump must not contain aircraft castings, wrought aluminium material, or ingots, all of which belong to other specifications.

Metallurgical Significance

Because Trump consists of identifiable automotive castings, experienced processors can apply knowledge of standard alloy families used in automotive casting (predominantly 3xx.x-series: A380/ADC12, A356, A319, etc.) to estimate lot chemistry with greater confidence than in fully mixed Tense. This reduces the spectrometric sorting burden and allows faster, more consistent processing into secondary casting alloy ingots. Trump castings from specific vehicle platforms or OEM suppliers are sometimes segregated further to maintain tighter alloy families — for example, isolating cylinder heads (typically A356 alloy) from transmission cases (typically A380/ADC12 alloy) to maximise recovery value.

Who Uses Trump Scrap

The primary consumers of Trump scrap are secondary aluminium die-casting alloy producers who supply the automotive supply chain. In India, this includes large secondary smelters in Gujarat (Rajkot, Ahmedabad), Tamil Nadu (Coimbatore, Chennai), and Maharashtra (Pune) who produce standard secondary casting alloy ingots (ADC12, LM6, LM24) for OEM and aftermarket automotive component manufacturers. Vehicle dismantling units and auto-shredding operations in the USA, Canada, Europe, Japan, and South Korea are the principal generators of Trump scrap. End-of-life vehicles generate substantial volumes of identifiable aluminium castings as the automotive fleet aluminium content has grown from roughly 40–50 kg per vehicle in the 1990s to 150–200 kg per vehicle in modern platforms.
