ISRI Description and Specification

Talk scrap consists of clean aluminium and copper radiators — specifically, those constructed with aluminium fins bonded to copper tubing. This design was the dominant construction method for automotive, industrial, and HVAC cooling systems for several decades before the all-aluminium radiator became standard in the 1990s and 2000s. Talk radiators are recognisable by their distinctive dual-metal construction: thin aluminium fin arrays pressed around or soldered onto copper tubes, with copper header tanks in many cases. The ISRI specification requires that Talk lots be free of brass tubing (which would indicate a different radiator construction class), free of iron components, and free of any other contamination such as rubber hoses, plastic end-tanks, steel brackets, or coolant residues. The material should be clean and reasonably drained of fluid at the time of baling or loading.

Compositional and Processing Characteristics

Talk radiators are typically processed by secondary smelters who segregate the copper and aluminium streams. At a basic level, Talk can be smelted together to produce a copper-bearing aluminium alloy — but more commonly, processors “sweat” the radiators (apply controlled heat) to separate the aluminium fins from the copper tubes, recovering both metals individually at higher net value. The copper recovery from a typical Talk radiator ranges from approximately 35% to 55% by weight depending on construction, with the aluminium fins comprising the balance. Because two metals are recovered, the economics of Talk processing require processors capable of handling both copper and aluminium melt streams, or those with established resale channels for separated copper tubes.

Who Uses Talk Scrap

The principal buyers of Talk scrap are secondary non-ferrous smelters with sweating or controlled-temperature processing capability, capable of separating the aluminium fin and copper tube streams for individual downstream use. In India, these include multi-metal processing yards in industrial clusters such as Moradabad (UP), Alang-Bhavnagar (Gujarat), and Pune, where Talk radiators are processed in bulk. Copper smelters and brass ingot manufacturers may also buy Talk on a copper-recovery basis, reselling the aluminium fraction separately or blending it into secondary aluminium ingots. Auto-parts recyclers and scrap dealers who handle end-of-life vehicles collect Talk radiators as part of their vehicle dismantling operations before resale to processors. HVAC system scrapping operations, industrial cooling system dismantlers, and ship-breaking facilities (which generate large volumes of marine cooling equipment) are additional supply-side sources relevant to importers and domestic scrap aggregators dealing in Talk.

Trade and Sourcing Notes

Talk scrap is sourced heavily from automobile graveyards, vehicle dismantling units, and HVAC equipment recyclers in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Australia — markets with mature end-of-life vehicle recycling ecosystems and high volumes of older-generation automobiles with dual-metal radiators. Since all-aluminium radiators (Tally grade) have become the norm in vehicles manufactured after roughly 1995–2005 depending on the market, the global supply of Talk is gradually declining as older vehicle fleets are retired. This long-term supply contraction is expected to sustain premium pricing for Talk relative to all-aluminium grades over the coming decade. Pre-shipment inspection to verify absence of brass tubing contamination is standard practice, as brass misrepresented as copper in Talk lots materially affects the recovery economics for the buyer.
